Food has a unique power to dissolve borders. This past Sunday, July 19th, our Campo de Ourique hub felt less like a boutique store and more like a global neighbourhood kitchen.
We had the absolute pleasure of hosting the talented Kanatsu-san (@makoto_made) for an intimate, hands-on Japanese Cooking Workshop. Around the counter stood participants representing entirely different nationalities. Despite coming from different corners of the world, everyone spoke the exact same language: curiosity, laughter, and a love for good food.

đ„ą Shaping Our Creations Together
Japanese home cooking is a beautiful, mindful art. Kanatsu-san guided our global group through the comforting basics of crafting a traditional meal:
- Miso Soup from Scratch: Learning the art of brewing a rich, authentic dashi broth.
- The Art of the Onigiri: Mastering the delicate technique of pressing and shaping our rice balls.
- Sweet Dorayaki: Flipping fluffy, golden Japanese pancakes filled with sweet bean paste.
There is no better icebreaker than crafting food together. Between concentrating on our shapes, sharing laughs, and following Kanatsu-sanâs gentle guidance, the kitchen quickly filled with shared moments of joy.

đ”đčđŻđ”Where Japan Meets Portugal
Instead of a formal sit-down, the energy was fluid, casual, and social. As each dish was finished, we plated our handmade Japanese creations directly onto beautiful traditional Portuguese tiles by Alvaro Almeida, a talented Portuguese ceramic artisan who hand paints contemporary, multifunctional tiles inspired by 19th century Lisbon facades.
Seeing these culinary worlds collide was a beautiful moment. It was a literal, visual blend of culturesâthe comforting soul food of Japan meeting the historic craftsmanship of Lisbon.
We gathered around the counter, stood together, and ate the fruits of our labour while sipping traditional green tea. No barriers, no formalitiesâjust people from around the world sharing a deeply special, local Lisbon afternoon.

â€ïžA Touch of Saudade: Leaving a Piece of Japan, Taking Portugal Home

This workshop carried a very special, emotional meaning for us. Kanatsu-san has been living here in Lisbon, but this upcoming September, she will be moving back to Japan for good.
Sundayâs class brought a beautiful sense of saudade to the kitchenâa lasting memory to anchor her time in our city. By bringing her kitchen traditions to our neighbourhood, she has left a permanent piece of Japan right here in Lisbon. And as we plated her food on our traditional tiles, we hope she carries a little piece of Portugal with her on her next big journey back home. Arigato gozaimasu, Kanatsu-sanâyou will always have a place at our table!
